You would benefit from talking therapy when you notice a particular problem interfering with your usual way of living. This problem may be a personal or a relational difficulty that has been persisting for a while. Whether you feel low confidence in decision making or anxiety in particular situations or a long standing pattern of relational difficulties, you will find that talking therapy can enable you to understand where difficulties stem from and how to work on them.
In the context of our practice, counselling usually refers to a short-term piece of work that targets a particular problem or situation. Psychotherapy is an open-ended process that usually lasts longer and aims at the person gaining deeper self-awareness; it is a space wherein a person is invited to process difficult feelings and experiences. Nevertheless, in day-to-day practice we know that the work is shaped as per the individual needs of the client and the length is reviewed and mutually decided between client and therapist.
The wish is to always adapt our approach to the needs of the client, but we take responsibility for the work to bring the wished for results! Before deciding whether online therapy could be effective and safe for you we need to consider the presenting problem and any risks involved, therefore this is usually decided after the initial assessment. It is also important to establish that clients will have access to a private space and safe software in order to attend sessions.
In the contact form you are invited to give information about the presenting concern. You can be as succinct or as detailed as you feel is necessary prior to initial assessment. You are also invited to identify whether you are looking for individual sessions or other. It would be useful for us to also know what help you are presently receiving or have received in the past e.g. medical input, with regards to the presenting concern. All this will guide us to the right decision!
